ABOUT THE IFA SPEAKER

Mrs Joanna Hoare, Chair:
International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA) (UK)
Founder: Joanna Hoare Institute of Aromatherapy (U.K.)
Invigilator:
International Federation of Aromatherapists (IFA) (UK)
Member: Aromatherapy Organisation Council
Joanna has been a Beauty Therapist for many years working first for Lancôme of Paris, then after marrying and having a family she opened her Beauty Salon in 1968. After that it was a matter of obtaining further qualifications such as Electrolysis, Remedial Camouflage, CIDESCO Diploma and finally a Bachelor of Physiatrics Degree. In 1972 she opened her Beauty School which was one of the first in the U.K. - the students took qualifications in Facial and Bodywork and of course the CIDESCO Diploma. Joanna became an Examiner for IHBC (of which she is now a Fellow) - she is also a Fellow of the British Association of Beauty Therapists (BABTAC). She examined for CIBTAC and CIDESCO and is still an examiner for CIDESCO all over the world.

Joanna enjoys teaching and has never stopped although she sold her School a few years ago. She started coming to the Far East to teach and conduct Seminars in 1979 but it was in 1972 that she was first interested in Aromatherapy in the U.K. and took a Course - but the clients were not interested until around 1980 when people became disenchanted with the use of antibiotics and looked towards natural therapies. So in 1984 Joanna trained with Madame Micheline Arcier in London. Madame Arcier was the pupil of Marguerite Maury, the pioneer of Aromatherapy massage who died in 1968. Micheline is still alive and has a Salon in Knightsbridge, London. Joanna soon began to attend Seminars on Advanced Aromatherapy and Congresses and then she taught Aromatherapy courses to her own Beauty students which became very popular.

Joanna was the first to introduce Aromatherapy to Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Taiwan and taught in Australia too. She was appointed an International Beauty Therapy Examiner for CIDESCO in 1983 and now, besides examining their Beauty Therapy Courses she examines their Aromatherapy Diploma Course. She joined the I.F.A. (International Federation of Aromatherapists) at their inauguration in 1985 and became a member of their Council in 1998. She is still on the Council but in addition she has been elected to serve as Chairperson. Joanna has an IFA accredited Course and is an approved IFA tutor. Joanna examines for the IFA. She has lectured at many International Congresses from Vienna, Hambourg and Finland - the most recent was in Athens (Greece) for CIDESCO when she spoke on AROMATHERAPY - the skin, mind and body.

Joanna also recently lectured in the U.K. on Aromatherapy and Cancer Care, since she works at The Fountain Centre attached to The Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford, Surrey. The venue for the Joanna Hoare Institute of Aromatherapy is now The Fountain Centre and is run at weekends - sometimes it is a CPD weekend (Continual Professional Development). Joanna will also run a Perfume Workshop or teach Indian Head massage to professionals. Joanna tries to source the best essential oils for her clients and patients and although she is so busy she still tries to attend as many Congresses and Seminars as possible and encourages her students to do the same. Essential oil properties are varied and must be used properly and with the advice of a qualified Aromatherapist.
